Dead Kennedys " Police Truck"

San Fransisco, 1978, the Dead Kennedys got together and rocked it. They had a rather satirical disposition and drove for shocking lyrics and display. Jello Biafra is a name made to be a combination of mass produced food and a third world country, funny eh?

Richard Hell and the Voidoids "Blank Generation"

The Voidoids are a first wave American punk band fronted by Richard Hell of the New York Dolls. These guys originally sported the studded leather look that was made more popular by the Sex Pistols. Blank Generation is the album featuring this song.

Toxic Holocaust "Gravelord"

These fellas worship the Gravelord. I don't know who the Gravelord is, but by looking at the cover of this album I'd imagine he's a couple of wolves

Bouncing Souls "Manthem"

Hailing from New Jersey since '87 is the Bouncing Souls! Reigniting the pogo in punkers, these guys are just a good ol' boy punk band. They're fast, sometimes rude, they'll eat your food!

GWAR "I Hate Love Songs"

GWAR is a shock rock band. Chances are if you've seen or heard of them on the news or radio, it's not been in a positive light

Dillinger Four "Ode to the North American Snake Oil Distributor"

I saw these guys live and it was rather gnarly. If I had to describe their music, I'd say it is magical.

Swingin' Utters "Five Lessons Learned"

This Californian band formed in the later '80s are heavily influenced by Irish folk and country music. It's rather apparent in some of their other songs. This one's off the album Five Lessons Learned, duh!

Pinhead Gunpowder "Cabot Gal"

This made me laugh, and I copied it from Wikerpdia: "The band's name comes from a brand of "high octane" green tea served at the Arcata co-op and discovered serendipitously by Aaron Cometbus during one of his many dumpster diving adventures." These guys are from the East Bay and are notable for having Billy Armstrong from Green Day as a guitarist.

Hüsker Dü "I'll Never Forget You"

Not to rag on hardcore bands, but most of them just seem generic and uninspired to me. Hüsker Dü are the epitome of the exception to me. This Minnesotian band started in 1979 and did some stuff. To be honest, I had a hard time just putting the dots over the u's.

Daycare Swindlers "Heroin Beach"

Here's another band I really don't know much about, nor seem to have much info about them on the internet. I do know that drummer Reiter had this to say about the band's current status: "So, yeah... What the fuck are those ancient losers in the Daycare Swindlers doing? The simplest answer is that we're a band again. We settled the alimony. Stevie only wants to kick Reiter's ass 50% of the time and Mike's doctor says the cocktail is working and he can get on stage again. We'll be found on the odd local stage and the much odder out of town stage from time to time. We've got a rack of tunes that we're pretty proud of and we're keen to play them out and record. You can catch us at Black Cat on 9/6 and there will be some more shit after that. Please make it out if you can. We miss the fuck out of you guys."

Naked Raygun "Soldier's Requiem"

If you're delivery's late, it's free of charge; that I can promise you. I'd like to take this time to inform you who don't already know that Captain Drunkass is not an alter ego of mine, and I appreciate his input over the time I took away from this 'ere blog

Important things: Naked Raygun were a Chicago based punk band active '80 to '92. Starting off, they were a hardcore band, but around the early '90s started incorporating a more melodic edge. They did it pretty well I think.

Men's Recovery Project - Normal Man

Damn, I went a bit overboard with the Project, eh?

Fuck It.

Go Hard!

-Captain Drunkass Drinks Whiskey Alone

Men's Recovery Project - Get Your Dick Out of My Food

Could there be a better song title out there? Think so? Well what is it then?

Douchebag.

-Captain Drunkass

Men's Recovery Project - Why We Are Lazy

More from the Men.

-Captain Drunkass

Men's Recovery Project - Million Man March

If you can find weirder shit than Men's Recovery Project, then I guess you're a more fucked up person than I am because this band takes the cake. Try listening to their discography for more than a few songs without thinking you're on another planet. Yeah, can't do it? No shit. The Project will melt your mind.

Say a Prayer

I don't know if prayer is your thing or not, but when shit gets hectic I think everyone prays to something or someone in their own personal manner. I'm only posting these songs for a minute as Stephen recently suffered a loss of a loved one, so send the man some love, however you want to do it.

-Captain Drunkass

Brutal Dildos - AIDS

Hey, I know the bass player from the internet! Total scumbag, but in a most endearing way. Fucking great performance with a nifty stage light-up stage prop to boot! I don't know if these guys are around anymore but this is some excellent shit here. Totally juvenile and offensive punk rock from Beer City

-Captain Drunkass

Leatherface - Watching You Sleep

The greatest band on the planet - Leatherface. A few things that come to mind when I think about these guys are honesty, intricacy and an attention to metaphor not usually heard of in punk rock. Leatherface is the smart man's choice to get wistfully piss drunk to and if you don't have any of their records you're really missing out on one of the true great bands of our era.

I Heart Leatherface so very, very much that I would leave my wife for Frankie Stubbs.

-Captain Drunkass

Dear Landlord - I Live in Hell

Boots, braces and coneheads! Fuck yes! What a great show! Good recording of what looks like an great performance by these new jacks. Cop "Dream Homes" and you won't be disappointed. Short, fast, jaded and oh what a bright fucking future for Dear Landlord.

-Captain Drunkass

Bikini Kill - Liar

From Olympia, Washington to Washington, DC, these girls (and a boy)were about the hippest shit back in the early nineties, right alongside the late, great, Nation of Ulysses. In fact, I got to see both in some shitty church basement right around the corner from where my friend used to buy crack. Not to sound misogynistic here, but this was about the only band I've ever seen that if you even bumped into a girl wrong you'd get throttled by about 15 angry Riot Grrrrls in babydoll dresses and combat boots. Fun times.

-Captain Drunkass

Off With Their Heads - Die Today

Off With Their Heads live on a city bus full of punks! These guys are one of the best things going today - crunchy, angry and waaaaay too full of self-loathing to have any positive effect on anyone. Straight from one of the most fertile scenes around today, the fine, fine town of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Git some!

-Captain Drunkass

Murphy's Law - Quest for Herb

The world's greatest party band, Murphy's Law! Jimmy Gestapo and company have been doing this shit for a loooooong time, singing politically incorrect hardcore anthems for the every day boys and girls who just want to get stoned and drunk and laid and there ain't a fucking thing wrong with that. It sure beats 99.9% of the the straight-edge and Krishna-core that was coming out of NYC when Murphy's Law was in their heyday. This song was the anthem for my teenage years.

"10 bucks in hand, herb's in demand!"

-Captain Drunkass

GG Allin - Gypsy Motherfucker

"GG Allin, I've got news for you, man, and it ain't good news."

Well, no shit. There's something inherently gratifying about someone as utterly devoid of pretentions, as GG was in life and in death. What a complete pile of shit, but he walked it liked he talked it and the motherfucker was always real. He lived how he wanted to live and died because of it. All Hail GG Fucking Allin!

The Offspring "Bad Habit"

I think this song is most recognized by the vocal solo in the bridge. I remember geeking out to it as a child...still my favorite song from this album....

Toys That Kill "Amphetamine St."

This DIY band was formed from a previous band called Five Year Plan. Started in '89, they had a good ten year streak of it.

Avail "Done Reckoning"

Originally formed in North Virginia in '87, Avail moved to Richmond in '90 and released their first album in '92. A one Captain Drunkass had this to say about the band: "Fun facts about Avail? Well, everyone thinks they are a Richmond, VA band, which, I guess it's fair to say they are. But, on a more grassroots level, they are actually from ...Reston, VA, the next town over from where I grew up. They used to play these benefit shows called "Jam For Man" when they were still very, very young. I got to see some of their very first shows at the Reston Community Center at Jam For Man, circa '88 or '89. I remember not remembering punching some dude in the face for pushing my girlfriend at one of these shows." This is the first song from Front Porch Stories

Fugazi "Great Cop"

Fugazi is a DC band formed by ex-members of Minor Threat and Rites of Spring. The band is lead by legend Ian MacKaye who chose the word "fugazi" from Vietnam War stories. The word means "fucked up, ambushed and zipped into a body bag." This song's called "Great Cop" and it's from the 1993 album In on the Kill Taker.

Adolescents "No Way"

Adolescents are a hardcore supergroup comprised of members from Agent Orange and Social Distortion. Their self-titled album is considered one of the more influential punk albums from the revival era. This song's from that album.

Rudimentary Peni "Cosmetic Plague"

Rudimentary Peni is a British band lead by guitarist/singer Nick Blinko. Blinko did all the artwork for their albums, and was at one point admitted to a psychiatric hospital. It is rumored that while in the hospital, he wrote the album Pope Adrian 37th Psychristiatric. This one's from The EP's of RP.

The Cramps "Garbage Man"

Cramps are unpleasant, often painful sensations caused by muscle contraction or overshortening. THE Cramps are a psychobilly/horror punk band who's career spanned from '76 to '09... ending abruptly after suffering the death of their lead singer, Lux Interior. This one's off the album Bad Music for Bad People

Samhain "November Fire"

This song is off the third Samhain ablum called Samhain III: November Coming Fire. Samhain is a Celtic holiday, but happily for me, this isn't the place for a history lesson. Formed in '83 by Glenn Danzig immediately after his departure from the Misfits, Samhain were more the bridge connecting Misfits and Danzig. If I had to guess, I'd say they listened to the Doors in large amounts.

The Soviettes "Multiply and Divide"

The Soviettes are a four piece band from Minnesota. The thing that makes them above average is that every member in the band acts as a "lead" vocalist.

The World/Inferno Friendship Society "Thumb Cinema"

This Brooklyn band fuzes jazz and punk and gives it that gypsy feel that just sounds nice. They incorporate many instruments such as piano, accordian and horns to compliment the typical punk band instruments. That's what give these guys just the edge I like; they're different AND tallented! This song's called "Thumb Cinema" and it's off the album Addicted to Bad Ideas.

Hit the Switch "Tidal Wave"

Hit the Switch is a band from Chino, California. They are a pretty recent group and I can't really find much information for them on the internet. BUT, as promised, I deliver

Descendents "Hope"

No, it isn't a Sublime song

SNFU "Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump"

Just when you thought Nickelback was the best thing to fall out of Canada since Sum 41, here come these guys who've been together since the 80's. SNFU have been rocking for years, in the times they haven't been apart. Their nightmarish lyrical imagery is something to behold. The wit of Chi Pig is astounding, and I'm glad to announce this song as song of the day. This song's off the album In the Meantime and in Between Time

Refused "Summerholidays vs Punkroutine"

Refused is usually described as a Swedish hardcore band, but they're just one of those few badass bands who do what they want indiscriminately with vulgar passion. They lasted from '91 to '98. The band went through some emotional devastation and personal issues, and tragically broke up. Even more sad, their last show on their last US tour was to take place in a friend's basement but was shut down by the boys in blue

Wednesday, August 25, 2010

American Steel "Love and Logic"

American Steel are a California punk band formed in '95. They kind of remind me of Against Me! That's all I feel like writing

Monday, August 23, 2010

Subhumans "Religious Wars"

The Subhumans are an English punk band formed in 1980, most notable for their crass hardcore sound. They started out on Flux of Pink Indians' label and shortly after started their own. They disbanded in '85 and did a no more than a couple of reunion shows up until 1998 when they started touring the UK and US again. Since then they have made an impressive live album for Fat Wreck and released an album called Internal Riot for their own label Bluurg Records.

Dwarves "Speed Demon"

These guys are raunchy. These guys are rude. These guys are not friendly. I like these guys. Originally formed in Chicago during the 80's under the name The Suburban Nightmare, the Dwarves are it man. These guys kind of remind of GG Allin because of their wild stage performances. In 1993, they released a press statement that their guitarist HeWhoCanNotBeNamed was stabbed to death in Philedelphia, which later turned out to be a hoax. How cool is that!?

NoFX "Fan Mail"

Now here's another punk band that I feel really doesn't need an introduction. NoFX have been together since the mid eighties and are considered pioneers of the punk "scene." This song is actually a Dickies cover, the original being off the Dickies' album Dawn of the Dickies. Before NoFX released their fairly recent album Wolves in Wolves Clothing, they released 7" EP's for every month building up to the record to fans in the 7" of the Month Club. This was from February's 7IMC release.

Lard "The Power of Lard"

"Hey man, life is my college." Lard is a great band formed in 1989 by the collaborative minds of Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys and Al Jourgenson of Ministry. I can only describe them as a slightly industrial DK. They've never officially toured and have only played a handful of shows in San Fransisco, mostly openning for Ministry. This song's off the EP The Power of Lard, and it's hands down weird. Enjoy, this is my favorite Lard song.

Circle Jerks "Operation"

This is the best thing I've seen since Henry Rollins got nailed in the forhead with a beer can in Germany, not hating. The Circle Jerks are a punk band from Hermosa Beach, California. Formed in 1979, they made an impressive impact on punk rock as we know it. You might recognise Keith Morris (singer) as the original Black Flag singer. The band being plagued by haituses, guitarist Greg Hetson later went on to be in Bad Religion, which I'll touch on at a later date. This song's off Group Sex, the band's first album.

The Lawrence Arms "Hey, What Time is 'Pensacola: Wings of Gold' on Anyways?"

The Lawrence Arms are a three piece punk band from Chicago, deriving their name from the lower class apartments they resided in. Appariently that ended in eviction, but did they let that stop them from rocking? No, because eviction's about as rock and roll as it gets! The song here's called "Hey, What Time is 'Pensacola: Wings of Gold' on Anyways?" and it's from the album Cocktails & Dreams. I hope you guys enjoy these, expect a new song every day!
